Google is selling popular Pixel phones starting at $249 – here's how the deal works
Google today announced a new Certified Refurbished Program, which lists older Pixel phone models at an “up to” 40% discount. The catalog includes ZDNET-recommended picks like the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro, and I’m seeing devices sell for as little as $249.

Refurbished units aren’t exactly new-conditioned, but the company says its listings are each carefully inspected and “tested to ensure premium quality” and come with a one-year warranty in case of any accidents or malfunctioning. The warranty matches what Google offers with its flagship Pixel 9 phones — a key advantage compared to buying a used phone from a third-party marketplace like eBay or Swappa.
The devices have also been refurbished with genuine Google parts, meaning you can expect a display, battery, and other components of a similar quality as those found in new handsets. Again, should you buy a second-hand phone from an independent reseller, there’s no guarantee that you’ll receive a device with genuine parts.
At the time of writing, Google has the following models listed in its Certified Refurbished Program:
I wouldn’t say these are the most competitive prices, but it’s worth considering the after-sales support that comes with the refurbished phones, such as the extended warranty and use of genuine parts. There’s also peace of mind in buying the phones directly from the manufacturer, with all the colors, storage sizes, and other SKUs laid out in front of you.
Also: The used smartphone market is booming. Surprisingly, that’s good news for Apple
Notably, while none of the phones sold support Google’s latest AI tools, they’re still receptive to operating system upgrades, Pixel Feature Drops, and security patches for at least another two years. The Pixel 7 Pro, for example, will receive updates until the end of 2028, keeping itself feature-relevant for at least four more years.
With Black Friday just a few weeks away, I’d advise readers shopping on a dime to consider waiting for the shopping event to come as they evaluate the best offers, discounts, and promotions on smartphones. There’s a good chance you’ll find something that fits your needs and budget.
