NordVPN maker's new identity theft protection service will reimburse you
The company behind NordVPN has created a new service called NordProtect that’s geared toward protecting users from identity theft. This new product includes features such as identity recovery and restoration, secure credit monitoring, 24/7 dark web monitoring, and cyber extortion protection.
The identity recovery and restoration feature enables victims of identity theft to be reimbursed up to $1 million for expenses — such as legal costs or lost wages — that are incurred while restoring an identity. The secure credit monitoring offers customers an individual monthly credit score and notifies users of any suspicious credit activity. As for dark web monitoring, NordProtect alerts users if credentials, phone numbers, SSNs, or other assets about their identity have been leaked to the dark web.

According to Tomas Sinicki, managing director of NordProtect, “Identity theft is a global problem, and its frequency is on the rise, which is why enhancing current features and adding new tools to NordProtect is a continuous effort.” Sinicki continues to say, “NordVPN started working with this vertical in late 2023, when cyber protection and cyber insurance benefits were launched in the US and Europe, respectively. The company expects to launch NordProtect in more markets and as a standalone product in the first half of 2025.”
Consumer Affairs reports that identity theft has increased nearly 382% over 20 years, with Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Ohio seeing the largest increases over the past five years. Other figures in the report included:
- Thirty-somethings reported identity theft more frequently than any other age group.
- Georgia had the highest number of reported cases per capita.
- There were 416,582 cases of credit card fraud reported in 2023.
Identity theft is not going away and, most likely, will continue to increase, so anything you can do to protect yourself should be considered a must.
NordProtect is included only with the Prime plan ($7.89/mo); if you use a Free, Basic, Plus, or Ultimate plan, you’ll have to upgrade, which you can do here. Of course, along with the NordProtect service, you’ll also get the popular NordVPN service, ThreatProtection Pro, Password Manager, and 1TB of encrypted cloud storage.
