Revolutionizing Cybersecurity: Insights from Kevin Brew at RCSI
Celebrating Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October reminded us of the importance of continuous learning and staying updated with the latest security practices. As we move forward, it’s essential to continue emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity and celebrating stories of excellence.
I had the pleasure of speaking with a Network Architect at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), about his experiences with Cisco Security solutions.
A Cisco Insider Cybersecurity Advocate, Brew shared valuable insights into how Cisco’s comprehensive approach to security has transformed his organization’s cybersecurity posture.
Brew’s story brings to light the transformative power of Cisco Security solutions in addressing complex cybersecurity challenges.
Transforming cybersecurity with Cisco
Kevin’s organization, RCSI, faced significant challenges managing and securing its extensive cloud environment. They looked to Cisco Security Solutions to address these challenges. Cisco provided a comprehensive and scalable approach to securing their network infrastructure.
“Our primary challenge was managing a considerable cloud environment, where most of our networking and services are hosted,” Brew said. Ensuring the security of this environment while maintaining operational efficiency was critical. “Cisco Security has allowed us to secure and monitor our cloud inventory more effectively, closing knowledge gaps in our security footprint and providing a better overall security posture.”
Cisco Security inspires best practices
Cisco’s approach to cybersecurity inspired Brew and his team to adopt practices that enhanced their overall security strategy. One change was to implement a tag-based architecture to manage security policies in the cloud, which allowed the team to automatically apply security policies to new services as they were added to the system. These policies made their deployment process more efficient and secure.
The team also embraced a more scalable approach to their cloud security inspired by Cisco. “This has involved rethinking how we manage security within our cloud environment, giving more control to those directly involved in delivery, and allowing for a more decentralized and responsive security management structure,” Brew said.
Staying ahead of emerging threats
Integrating advanced features, such as continuous monitoring, automated data backup and recovery, and regular vulnerability management has significantly enhanced the team’s security capabilities.
“Cisco’s commitment to innovation has profoundly impacted our ability to stay ahead of emerging threats,” Brew said. “The innovative design of Cisco Security solutions, which utilise a more organic and integrated approach to cloud security, has allowed us to replicate security requirements across servers seamlessly. This has made it easier to maintain a consistent security posture across our entire cloud environment, ensuring we are well-prepared to counter new and evolving threats.”
Training is key in cybersecurity
Brew’s story further proves how continuous education and training are vital to maintaining a robust cybersecurity posture.
“Cybersecurity is ever-evolving, and staying ahead of the curve is crucial,” Brew said. “Continuous learning and training are vital. At RCSI, we ensure that our team is well-versed in the latest cybersecurity trends and technologies through regular training programs and certifications. This commitment to education helps us to counter emerging threats and maintain a strong security posture effectively.”
Invitation to Cisco Security training
Just as staying ahead in the cybersecurity landscape was crucial to Brew’s team, you can also benefit from Cisco’s comprehensive training programs, gaining the knowledge and skills needed to protect your organization effectively.
These programs cover topics from basic security principles to advanced threat detection and response techniques.

Kevin Brew is the Network Architect at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. His role involves leading the design, implementation, and support of secure and scalable network solutions for the institution.
Kevin’s interest in tech began at Ashbourne Community School from 1995 to 2000, working with a team created by the school to create an educational website that won awards both domestically and internationally, followed by higher education at the Technological University Dublin from 2000 to 2004, where he earned a degree in Electronics and Communications. Kevin’s efforts to share best practices and his membership in several customer communities, such as Cisco Insider Advocates, demonstrate his commitment to helping the broader IT community Kevin will present the success story of RCSI soon at Cisco Live Amsterdam.
