5 quick ways Apple's AI tools can fine-tune your writing on the fly

Need a good editor to spruce up your emails, messages, or notes? With the right iPhone, iPad, or Mac, you can turn to Apple’s Writing Tools for help. Part of Apple Intelligence, this AI feature can proofread, rewrite, and even summarize content across Mail, Messages, Notes, and other text-based apps.
To revise your own words, you can pick a specific style and decide whether to accept the suggested changes. To get the gist of content written by someone else, you can ask for a regular summary, a bullet-point list, or a table organized with the key information.
With a supported device, you can also use the integrated ChatGPT for help composing text. Even if you’re a skilled writer, Writing Tools can alert you to typos and grammatical errors that you may otherwise miss.

To use Writing Tools and ChatGPT, you’ll need an iPhone 15 Pro or higher, an iPad with an M1 chip or higher, or a Mac with at least an M1 chip. For ChatGPT, you must also be running iOS/iPadOS 18.2 or higher and macOS Sequoia 15.2 or higher. Also, make sure Apple Intelligence is enabled on your device.
Even professional writers can always use a good proofreader to check their words for mistakes. To try this, create a new email in Mail or a note in Apple Notes. With the keyboard visible, tap the left arrow and then tap the Writing Tools icon (the one with a pencil sticking into a circle). In the Writing Tools menu, tap the option for Proofread.
In response, the AI shows the number of suggested changes. Tap the down arrow to go to the first change. To reject it, tap the button for Use Original. To accept it and move to the next change, tap the down arrow again. To go back to the original draft at any time, tap Revert. Otherwise, tap Done when you’re finished to apply all the changes.
Maybe you’re struggling to write an email or message. To snag some AI-generated help, open the Writing Tools menu and select Rewrite. Review the revised version. If you don’t like it, tap Rewrite to request a different version. If you do like it, tap Done. To go back to the original, tap Revert.
You can also pick a specific style to refine your words. In the Writing Tools menu, select Friendly, Professional, or Concise. The AI revises the text in your chosen style. Again, tap Rewrite to try again, Done to accept the new version, and Revert to return to the original draft.

Want to apply specific changes to your words? In the Writing Tools menu, type a description in the field for “Describe your change.” For example, you may want to tell it to make the writing shorter and snappier. You can then request another rewrite, accept the new draft, or revert to the original.
Maybe you’ve received an email for which you’d like to get a summary. With the email open, tap the Summarize button at the top. The summary appears above the email.
You can also request a specific type of summary. Select the text you want summarized. Tap the button for Writing Tools. From the menu, select Key Points, and the AI creates a summary with the main points of the email. Select List, and the summary is organized into a bullet-point list. If the information lends itself to a table format, select Table to organize the content into rows and columns.
Finally, you can call on ChatGPT to create an email, message, or note from scratch. First, make sure ChatGPT is enabled. Start a new email or note and select the Writing Tools icon on the toolbar. Swipe to the bottom of the menu and select Compose. Tap in the “Compose with ChatGPT” field and type or dictate a description of what you want to write, then tap the up arrow.

ChatGPT generates and displays the content in response to your request. From there, tap Rewrite to ask for a new version. Tap one of the suggestions to add those specific details to the text. When finished, tap Done to accept ChatGPT’s draft.
