Perplexity AI teases a new browser 'for agentic search'

The company behind Perplexity AI has announced plans to unleash a browser specifically for agentic search.
Perplexity AI is an AI-powered search engine and research tool that combines the massive amounts of information found in large language models (LLMs) with real-time web searching to provide comprehensive, accurate, and up-to-date answers to user queries.

I’ve been using Perplexity AI as my default search engine for a few weeks now and while it’s not perfect, it’s a vast improvement over using a traditional search engine. Now, Perplexity developers are working on a new browser, called Comet, to empower users for agentic search.
What is agentic search?
Essentially, agentic search is an AI-powered search tool that not only locates the information you’re looking for but can also understand more complex instructions, perform tasks, and even make autonomous decisions.
Think of agentic search as a blend of traditional search engines and AI; however, unlike Google’s attempts at AI, an agentic search only offers links it uses as citations, which makes it an outstanding research tool.
There isn’t much information about Comet so far, beyond this post on X.
I asked Perplexity if the company was developing a web browser and here’s the AI’s response:
“As of February 2025, Perplexity AI has not developed its own web browser. Perplexity AI is primarily known as an AI-powered search engine and research assistant. While users can integrate Perplexity into existing browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Edge as a search engine, there is no indication that Perplexity has created its own standalone web browser.”
In other words, Perplexity’s own AI doesn’t know about this development.
So, is a browser for agentic search even necessary?
It depends, I think, on how integrated Perplexity’s AI will be with the browser. I’ve configured Zen Browser to use Perplexity as my default search engine and that’s been a game-changer. I assume the Perplexity developers will do more than release a version of the Chromium web browser that features Perplexity as the default search engine.

I imagine it’s possible to inject AI into several traditional browser features, such as:
- Security – Use AI to detect phishing attempts, malicious links, and more.
- Tab management – Use AI to automatically organize and manage tabs based on user habits.
- Grammar suggestions – Use AI to help with grammar and spelling issues.
- Customizations – Use AI to help the browser adapt to user preferences.
- Improved accessibility – Enable real-time captions and advanced text-to-speech capabilities.
Of course, there are also the standard AI tricks — such writing assistance, summaries, and more.
I suggest checking the Perplexity blog for official announcements and you can sign up for the Comet waiting list here.
