Did iOS 18.4 wreck CarPlay for you? Try these fixes to get back on track

Apple

Apple’s latest version of iOS seems to be causing hiccups with CarPlay. Some users who installed the update are complaining on X and Reddit about random connection problems and other issues.

As spotted by 9to5Mac, several discussion threads have popped up since Apple released iOS 18.4 this past Monday.

The problems so far

In one discussion thread on Reddit, people are citing connectivity troubles, with one person saying that the CarPlay screen now appears blank. In another Reddit thread, some are griping that CarPlay is disconnecting and reconnecting following the update. In a post on X, one person who encountered the problem said it went away after installing the iOS 18.5 beta.

The glitch appears to be popping up across a range of auto makes and models with both wired and wireless CarPlay connections. However, other people who have updated are not complaining of any problems. I installed iOS 18.4 on Monday, and CarPlay still works fine through the wireless connection in my Toyota Camry.

Based on the reports, Apple should be aware of the glitch, though the company has not responded publicly. I contacted Apple to enquire further and will update the story with any response.

What you can do

If you are bumping into this issue, there are a few steps you can take, according to some of the people on Reddit. One suggestion is to unpair and remove your iPhone from CarPlay and then pair it again. Another tip is to force restart your phone. Some people have cited success with one or both of those measures.

To unpair your iPhone, go to Settings, select General, and then tap CarPlay. Select your car, and then tap the option for Forget This Car. At that point, restart your phone. To pair it again, return to the same CarPlay screen in Settings, wait for your phone to connect with your car, and then follow the steps to pair it.

To force restart your iPhone, press and quickly release the volume up button. Do the same with the volume down button. Press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.

Hopefully, one of those fixes will resolve the glitch. If not, you may have to wait until Apple releases a fix for it, either with iOS 18.5 or, more likely, with an interim update that will arrive sooner.
