What’s New in VMware Cloud on AWS: July 2021 – VMware Cloud Community


VMware Cloud on AWS has been helping customers migrate, extend and protect their vSphere workloads to the AWS Cloud in a fast, yet cost-effective manner. And once in the cloud, customers can modernize applications as per their needs with minimal disruption to their business. Many customers across different industries and geographies are using VMware Cloud on AWS to accelerate their hybrid cloud journey. e.g. GFK, a global leader in data and analytics for the consumer products industry, opted for a hybrid cloud model using VMware Cloud on AWS and is enjoying greater flexibility, agility and cost efficiency than it has ever known. At a regular cadence, we release some new features and capabilities in VMware Cloud on AWS as per customer’s requests. In our April blog post, we talked about some of the key capabilities released in VMware’s Q1’Fiscal Year 2022 such as PCI DSS Certification, Tanzu Mission Control support for provisioning TKG clusters on VMware Cloud on AWS, reduction of Stretched Cluster Cross-AZ charges, improvements in commerce experience, enhancements in migration capabilities with VMware HCX 4.0.0 release, new capabilities introduced in VMware Site Recovery and VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery, improvements in vRealize Cloud Management portfolio etc.

Now let’s look at what’s new this time around.

What’s New in VMware Cloud on AWS: July 2021

Improvements to workload security:

  • VMware NSX Advanced Firewall add-on: With NSX Advanced Firewall add-on, VMware Cloud on AWS customers can leverage advanced NSX security features to secure their applications from the ever-expanding threats on the internet. This optional add-on includes the following capabilities:
    • Distributed IDS/ IPS
    • Distributed Firewall with FQDN Filtering
    • Distributed Firewall with Layer 7 Application ID
    • Distributed Firewall with Active Directory based User ID – IDFW (Identity Firewall)

These add-on capabilities will help customers protect their workloads against vulnerabilities inside the VMware Cloud on AWS SDDCs with application or workload specific security policies thus reducing the attack surface of the workloads by allowing only the intended application traffic to flow into the SDDC. For a limited time – this optional add-on will be available to the customer at no additional charge through September 31, 2021, on SDDC version 1.15.  Post September 31, 2021, the add-on can be purchased for individual SDDCs in customer Org. It must be purchased for all hosts in the SDDC. It is priced on a per-host basis and usage metering is billed on a monthly basis. As hosts are added to or removed from the SDDC, they accrue charges starting with the month the change was made. Partial months are charged at the full monthly rate.

  • VMware Transit Connect/ SDDC Group connectivity to Transit VPC: VMware Transit Connect provides high bandwidth, resilient connectivity to SDDCs in an SDDC Group. It simplifies connectivity to AWS VPCs, as well as on-premises data centers over an AWS Direct Connect Gateway. Now, Transit Connect allows customers to configure specific network routes to VPC attachments in the same AWS Region. So, customers will be able to redirect traffic to Transit VPC for security policy application where they will inspect the traffic before egressing to the internet.

Improvements to enterprise workload support:

  • PCI DSS Certification for VMware Cloud on AWS service operating in AWS Europe (Milan): VMware Cloud on AWS received the highest level of PCI certification (PCI DSS Level 1 provider status). In phase 2, PCI compliant SDDCs will be enabled in one more AWS region: AWS Europe (Milan), that makes PCI compliant SDDC availability to 7 regions in total– AWS US West (Oregon), AWS US East (N. Virginia), AWS Europe (Frankfurt), AWS Europe (Milan), AWS Europe (Ireland), AWS Europe (London), AWS Asia Pacific (Sydney). By being certified as PCI DSS compliant level 1 service provider, VMware Cloud on AWS service operates in compliance with PCI DSS compliant security measures and controls, thereby potentially addressing the needs of a broad range of customers and workloads that need to store, process, or transmit cardholder or sensitive authentication data. VMware Cloud on AWS PCI DSS compliant infrastructure enables customers to evacuate PCI in-scope systems from their data centers with deployment, configuration and management of PCI enabled SDDCs. The VMware Cloud on AWS PCI DSS compliant solution reduces the time, effort, cost and complexity associated with operating applications requiring PCI.

Please note that this PCI DSS compliance certification is not applicable to any VMware Cloud on AWS add-ons. It is only applicable to core SDDC components (vCenter, ESXi, vSAN and NSX)

  • Expanding regional availability: AWS Europe (Milan): VMware Cloud on AWS will now be available in AWS Europe (Milan), further improving reach for our global and regional customers. With this new regional availability, this service will now be available across 18 AWS regions globally. Please note that currently only i3.metal instance type is available in AWS Europe(Milan) region. For regional availability and specific restrictions, please review the release notes.
  • Containers: Modernize enterprise workloads on VMware Cloud on AWS: VMware Tanzu portfolio supports VMware Cloud on AWS, delivering enterprise-ready Kubernetes runtime environments with VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid and unified management of those environments with VMware Tanzu Mission Control. Some of the new enhancements in this area include:
    • VMware Tanzu Application Services support on VMware Cloud on AWS: VMware Tanzu Application Service provides a modern developer-ready application platform for enterprises that want to continuously deliver and run microservices across hybrid cloud. It provides application development teams an automated path to production for custom code, and a secure, highly available and scalable runtime to efficiently manage Day 2 operations. With Tanzu Application Service 2.11 support for VMware Cloud on AWS, enterprises can now quickly extend their on-premises Tanzu Application Service environment on vSphere to the AWS Cloud in a consistent manner. Note: Please install new foundations in VMware Cloud on AWS to extend Tanzu Application Service deployment, rather than “lifting-and-shifting” any of the existing foundations.

    • Application Transformer for VMware Tanzu is a continuous application modernization engine that enables organizations to discover application types, analyze and visualize current application topology, recommend a modernization approach, and containerize suitable legacy applications to enhance business outcomes. With integration into VMC Console, this toolkit will empower customers with the ability to design and optimize their modernization journey through an iterative, flexible approach.
  • 2-host cluster improvements:
    • 2-node scale up from 1-node: Previously, customers who have purchased a single host SDDC for VMware Cloud on AWS had to scale up to 3-hosts to take advantage of production-grade environment with full SLAs. With this enhancement, now customers can manually scale up from 1-node SDDC to a 2-node SDDC which supports full SLAs for production workloads. Learn more
    • 2-Host secondary clusters with custom core support: Customers can now deploy additional 2-Host i3.metal clusters in any existing SDDC. Secondary 2-Host clusters support custom core count of 16 and 36 physical cores.
  • Microsoft SPLA (Service Provider License Agreement) Academic Licenses: Microsoft SPLA (Services Provider License Agreement) Academic Licenses: Starting May 17, 2021, all customers who are eligible for academic pricing for SPLA Products can self-qualify themselves as educational institutions on the VMC Console at a cluster level and take advantage of the discounted pricing. Customer must use the Microsoft Qualified Educational User Definition and criteria for their region, located here Microsoft Volume Licensing – Product Licensing Search to self-qualify for SPLA Academic pricing . Customers agree to Microsoft’s terms and conditions located in that definition document when they select their SPLA license type in the VMC console.  With this, qualified educational institutions will be able to migrate their Microsoft workloads to the cloud in a fast yet cost-effective manner.

Improvements to commerce experience:

VMware and AWS are constantly looking at ways to improve the commerce experience for customers that are purchasing the VMware Cloud on AWS service and associated value-added VMware solutions through AWS or its partner network. New enhancements planned in this area include:

  • New enhancements in the VMware integration with AWS Commerce Platform will allow for customers to purchase multiple VMware Cloud offerings and access usage data across the offered portfolio on their Cost and Billing Management Console
  • VMware will enable additional VMware products/services to be purchased from AWS or its partner network – including vRealize Operations Cloud, vRealize Automation Cloud, vRealize Network Insight Cloud, vRealize Log Insight Cloud, VMware Site Recovery, and VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery which will help in better infrastructure management
  • Usage Metering for Elastic IP and VMware Transit Connect: With this enhancement, VMware’s commerce platform will enable custom metering for Elastic IP and Transit VMware Transit Connect, thus providing unified metering platform for variety of usage types.
    • With custom metering for Elastic IP, customers will be invoiced for the Elastic IPs they use within the same billing period
    • With custom metering for TGW VMware Transit Connect, customer invoice will have data transfer charges over Transit Connect

Improvements in scale, customer experience and resiliency:

  • 4-Host Stretched Clusters (2-2-1): Customers can now deploy a 4 host Stretched Cluster. With two hosts in both AZs and a managed witness in the third, the cluster can survive the loss of an entire AZ. This powerful capability enables business-critical applications within VMware Cloud on AWS without rearchitecting for AWS Availability. With two hosts per AZ, vSAN depends on the Dual Site Mirror for resiliency and therefore comes with a 99.9% availability guarantee. This can be increased to 99.99% at any time by scaling up to a 6-host cluster. Learn more in this deep-dive technical blog

          Please note: If a 4-host stretched cluster is scaled out to a 6+ hosts for any reason, it cannot be scaled back down.

  • Expand SDDC Grouping across multiple AWS Regions: SDDC Groups enable customers to manage multiple SDDCs as a single logical entity. Previously, SDDC Group was limited to a single region. With this enhancement, customers can add/remove SDDCs in different AWS regions to/from a single SDDC Group. SDDC Groups leverage VMware Transit Connect for automatic provisioning of high bandwidth connectivity across regions.This is specifically useful for the customers to replicate SDDCs across regions.
  • vSAN policy monitoring and alert notification: With this new enhancement, customer is alerted in various ways (email, using the NGW web-hook for slack, Microsoft teams etc.) via the notification gateway if and when one of their workloads running in VMware Cloud on AWS is assigned a storage profile with an FTT that does not meet the eligibility criteria for the SLA guarantee. The customer will be able to view the entire inventory of VMs/objects with non-compliant storage policies in the VMC console and they will have the option to remediate all or a few of the VMs to a compliant policy with a single button click. If a customer has multiple such workloads at any point in time, they are sent a single notification for all of them with instructions on how to drill down into the details, instead of one notification per workload. Please note: The alerts will not be sent in real-time as the trigger events occur. They are batched and sent on a periodic basis once a day only if there are new objects/VMs created with a non-compliant storage policy in the last 24 hours.
  • Improvements to VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery: As a recap, VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery offers on-demand disaster recovery to IT administrators responsible for IT infrastructure and services resiliency, delivered as an easy-to-use SaaS solution with cloud economics. Some of the new enhancements in VCDR include:
    • Intra-region protection for cloud workloads: With this capability, customers will be able to protect their workloadson VMware Cloud on AWS across AWS Availability Zones in same region. It will provide a cost-effective DR option for customers who want to protect their critical workloads in the same AWS region due to regulatory and compliance requirements, which restrict their data to their home jurisdiction. Please note that cross-AZ data transfer will apply while moving data across 2 AWS Availability Zones.
    • SOC2, Type 1 Compliance: System & Organization Controls (SOC) reports are independent, third-party examination reports that help you and your auditors understand the controls established to support operations and compliance. By achieving SOC2, Type 1 compliance, it demonstrates that VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery achieved key compliance controls and objectives to meet SOC 2, Type 1 requirements.
    • Bring your own SDDC:VMware Cloud on AWS customers will now be able to use their existing VMware Cloud on AWS hosts as recovery hosts for VMware Cloud DR. They will be able to attach a pre-existing SDDC to the VMware Cloud DR instance without having to create it through the VMware Cloud DR management console, providing additional flexibility and simplicity in setting up DR operations.
    • Lower RPO for critical workloads: VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery will support a RPO as low as 30-minutes, ~8 times better than previous RPO, for critical on-premises workloads that require this higher frequency of replicated copies. With this performance improvement, customers can provide DR protection for an even broader set of their applications at a very cost-effective, low TCO. Please note: vSphere 7.0u2 is required on the source site for this new enhancement. On top of that, a patch needs to be applied to the hosts and vCenter to enable this feature. Patch will be available for download from VMware Cloud DR UI itself.
    • Expanding regional availability:VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery will continue to expand its regional coverage by delivering availability in AWS Europe (Milan). This will bring the availability of VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery to 17 Global AWS Regions.
    • Protect 2500 VMs per region per org: Customers can now protect up to 2500 VMs per region per org (as compared to 1500 VMs per region per org supported previously), allowing for increased protection scale, which is useful for large enterprise customers. The 2500 VMs can potentially be in a single scale-out cloud file system (SCFS), or more typically distributed across multiple SCFS (up to 4) instances.

  • Enhancements to VMware Site Recovery: VMware Site Recovery™ for VMware Cloud on AWS automates workload recovery in a DR event between on-premises data centers and VMware Cloud on AWS, as well as between different instances of VMware Cloud on AWS. Some of the new enhancements in this service include:
    • Support cross-region replication traffic overTransit Connect: Customer can now use VMware Transit Connect that provides high bandwidth, resilient connectivity for replication traffic between two VMC on AWS regions. Customers can now add or remove SDDCs from multiple AWS regions from an existing SDDC Group, enabling SDDCs in different regions to communicate over VTGWs peered across regions.
    • Expanding regional availability:VMware Site Recovery will continue to expand its regional coverage by delivering availability in AWS Europe (Milan). This will bring the availability of VMware Site Recovery to 18 Global AWS Regions.
  • VMware NSX Advanced Load Balancer (Avi) support for VMware Cloud on AWS: The VMware NSX Advanced Load Balancer (Avi) offers a modern, distributed software platform for customers to deploy turnkey application delivery and security in VMware Cloud on AWS. Avi automates day-0 deployment, provides self-service and central management, eliminates the overprovisioning that is common with traditional or virtual ADCs, and speeds up troubleshooting with powerful analytics. Avi helps customers simplify operations, deploy and manage load balancers consistently anywhere, and reduce costs for load balancing by around 50%. Please note: The lifecycle management is handled by the customer through application delivery automation and central orchestration capabilities provided by this solution.
  • Federation Setup with enterprise Identity provider:With enterprise federation, enterprises can use their corporate identities and credentials and link their VMware ID (My VMware) accounts to both log in to VMware Cloud Services and manage access to services/organizations/features within VMware Cloud services. With the new enhancement, customers will get self-service on-boarding experience to setup enterprise federation so that any customer can setup federation without the need of engagement with VMware, thus helping them accelerate the enterprise federation setup process. Benefits of using federated identity to access VMware Cloud Services:
    • Ability to use corporate credentials with VMware Cloud Services
    • Ability to work with Enterprise AD Groups
    • Enforce Enterprise Security policies
    • Control access with Identity provider enabled Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
  • VMware Cloud Console integration with VMware Cloud DR and VMware Horizon: VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery and VMware Horizon is part of the integrated experience within VMware Cloud Console. VMware Cloud Console is the center and entry point where our cloud customers log into VMware Cloud Console and start to explore, learn, order and consume VMware Cloud services including VMware Cloud on AWS, VMware Cloud on Dell EMC, VMware Cloud Universal, VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery and VMware Horizon and VMware Tanzu.

Improvements in migration capabilities:

  • VMware HCX: Migrations Estimations: Predictive Estimations for bulk migrations, real-time estimations for vMotion, RAV and cold migrations: With this enhancement, admins will be able to see a time completion estimate for vMotion, Replication-Assisted vMotion (RAV) and cold migrations as well as a more accurate estimate for bulk migrations, thus providing a better assessment of how long business-critical migration operations may take to complete.
  • VMware HCX: Seed Checkpoint for bulk Migration: In the past, VMware HCX automatically used to execute a cleanup process for failed replication-based migrations like bulk migrations, which leads to a total loss of replicated data. To the user this looks like they have lost all migration progress and for larger VM profiles, this can mean loss of many days of replication progress. This new enhancement provides a recoverable migration progress with checkpoint seed data- a choice for the user to retain replica disks at a target datastore if a migration is failed or cancelled. This will allow VMware HCX to reuse the disks on target site and use them for seeding replication data, avoiding the need to transfer the entire data again, thus accelerating replication-based migration without loss of replicated data.

Improvements in subscription options:

  • VMware Cloud on AWS Flexible subscription: Today, VMware Cloud on AWS hosts can be purchased on-demand or as 1-year or 3-year subscription with the option to pay monthly or upfront. Subscription purchasing options are tied to a specific region and instance type for the entire duration – without the ability to change or modify these dimensions. With the introduction of the new subscription offering, we will provide customers greater flexibility to exchange their flexible subscription to fit their changing business needs.

Feature details:

    • By purchasing a flexible subscription, customers are entitled to terminate their existing flexible term subscription (1-year or 3-year commitment) early and utilize the value remaining for a purchase of a new 1-year or 3-year subscription. Please note: To avail this flexibility, customers must purchase new flexible 1-year or 3-year term commitments, paid upfront. They cannot change previously purchased non-flexible 1-year or 3-year term commitments.
    • Some of the examples of flexible subscription exchange use cases are:
      1. Instance type: Customers can purchase a new term commitment for new instance type. This is specifically useful if customers would like to use existing subscription funds for a different use case where different instance type is more optimal.
      2. AWS Region: Customers can purchase a new term commitment for a different AWS region. This is specifically useful for the customers if they would like to utilize existing subscription funds for scaling IT infrastructure in new region as per their business needs such as footprint expansion in new regions, regional business growth etc.

Please note: The flexible subscription option is available for purchase through VMware direct route to market and VMware partners for the time being. The flexible subscription option is available for 1-year or 3-year term commitments only and not for on-demand option.

Improvements to advanced cloud management:

vRealize Cloud Management

VMware vRealize® Cloud Management is an intelligent hybrid cloud management solution that enables consistent deployments and operations for apps, infrastructure, and platform services, across VMware Cloud on AWS and on-premises/hybrid cloud environments. The solution helps organizations accelerate application migration to VMware Cloud on AWS as well as innovate with quick and easy access to services, gain efficiency by improving visibility and automation, and improve control while mitigating risk through unified operations and governance.

Below are the new enhancements planned for the key vRealize services:

  • VMware vRealize Automation Cloud provides self-service IaaS consumption with governance for VMware Cloud on AWS. New enhancements for vRealize Automation Cloud include:
    • Native Configuration Automation with SaltStack Config: Manage infrastructure automation and configuration management from a single pane. For the first time SaltStack Config is available as part of vRealize Automation Cloud and fully integrated in its VMware Cloud Template engine. Enjoy event-driven automation for auto-drift detection and remediation, day 2 orchestration, and more, as a service, available with just a few clicks.
    • Resource Quota Policy: Take control of the resource consumption in your VMware Cloud on AWS environment by applying resource limits. Guardrails can be enforced at the user, project or organization level and apply to common infrastructure objects such as CPU, Storage, Memory and number of instances.
    • Notifications: Configure notifications for important events to maintain visibility of your VMware Cloud on AWS environment proactively. Notifications can be a non-obtrusive governance approach, or an essential element of the overall cloud governance strategy.
    • Resource Center: Gain granular insights and perform actions for your VMware Cloud on AWS resources directly. The new Resource Center, combined with the existing deployment view, provides easy monitoring and lifecycle management for your VMware Cloud on AWS environment at the deployment AND resource level.
    • Multi-Project Policy Definition: Expand policy enforcements across user groups with project-based criteria. For large VMware Cloud on AWS environments, this feature enables governance automation and makes cloud administration simpler and more scalable.
    • Additional Policy Criteria: Apply granular control for your VMware Cloud on AWS environment by using an extended list of resource attributes, such as CPU count, OS Type and region, to define governance enforcement at the intended depth and breadth.
  • VMware vRealize Operations Cloud delivers self-driving IT operations management for private, hybrid cloud environments in a unified, AI-powered platform. Key enhancements for this service include:
    • Integrated Trial Experience

Provide the option for select VMC customers to ‘Activate’ vROps Cloud from within VMC console – use the existing UI approach of having a tile for vROps Cloud within the ‘Add-Ons’ in the VMware Cloud UI. When customer ‘activates’ vROps Cloud, all the integration tasks needed will be programmatically performed for the user in the background such as:

      • Automatically provision a vROps Cloud instances
      • Automatically map the vROps Cloud instance to the correct org
      • Automatically configuring to the VMC cloud account
      • Launch the vROps Cloud UI showing a custom-built dashboard to show the value of vROps-VMC integration
  • vRealize Network Insight Cloud enhancements for VMware Cloud on AWS customers: vRealize® Network InsightTM Cloud is a solution for end-to-end network visibility, troubleshooting, and predictive analytics that enables application migrations, optimizes network performance with troubleshooting capabilities, and manages the scaling VMware Cloud on AWS deployments. Key improvements for this service include:
    • Network and Security: Alerts, Intents, and Trends for VMware Cloud on AWS VMC networking limit-based alerts and Intents, alert category, alert type, set max. limit, current usage, criticality, description, fix recommendations, and “VMC on AWS Limit” alert type. These alerts will allow the VMC users in their VMC SDDC planning and troubleshooting efforts. Users will be able to create VMC networking intents in vRealize Network Insight for properly designing and managing their VMC network.
    • vRealize Network Insight Cloud is now part of vRealize Cloud Universal Enterprise Plus which will give customers more flexibility in their deployments to now have network visibility as part of the overall vRealize Cloud Universal deployments. This will help as businesses transition to cloud and monitor their on-premises infrastructure and allow them to take those same licenses to monitor cloud infrastructure after a cloud migration.
  • VMware vRealize Log Insight Cloud delivers centralized log management, deep operational visibility, and intelligent analytics across your VMware SDDC software stack running in VMware Cloud on AWS. Some of the enhancements in this service are:
    • Low-cost Storage: As part of Low Cost SKU we will be storing all ingested logs in S3 and allow querying across all the storage tiers. Logs rehydration allows customers to selectively bring their logs from S3 (or any cold storage) and indexed in Solr for efficient log analysis and troubleshooting. Once the logs are ingested to Solr they will be available for querying and analysis and the normal Solr based ingestion rates apply for the customer
    • HCX Log Integration: HCX implementation with vRLIC. These include all logs required for monitoring HCX health and troubleshooting:
    • able to channel HCX logs to connected customer vRLIC tenant
    • only have access to relevant logs, events, that are actionable
    • Filtering rules to allow SDDC Group Logs: SDDC Group Log filtering now supported in vRLIC for single, centralized logging.
    • VMC NSX-T Content Pack update: Advanced Security Log and Alert Forwarding: Ensures that NSX-T Advanced Security have their IDS/IPS alerts and logs forwarded to vRLIC.  NSX-T content pack on VMC on AWS supports:
      • Firewall rules – L7 Identity
      • Security – IDS/IPS events
