Try Programmability & Edge Computing on the Cisco IE3400 switch

We’ve got a real good treat for you! Now you can get hands-on with a real Cisco industrial switch, the Cisco Catalyst IE3400, from your home. The switches in this rugged series can be DIN-rail mounted with IP30 or even IP67 (IE3400 Heavy Duty) providing protection against dust and submersion in water. Hardened for vibration, shock and surge, the most robust switch model can operate under extreme temperatures of (–40°C to 75°C [–40°F to 167°F]). It has no fans (convection-cooled) and also has a mean time between failures (MTBF) of more than 550,000 hours! A robust rugged device which can operate nearly everywhere on factory floors, electrical substations, oil & gas fields and at trackside infrastructures.

Reserve your DevNet Sandbox now to get a glimpse of its software capabilities and what you can do with it from a developer perspective!

Get familiar with the user-friendly on-box Device Manger (WebUI) as seen below. Users can easily navigate in their browser through the monitoring data, configuration and settings of their industrial device.

Of course, you can access as well many other specific industrial features via SSH as well and access Modbus TCP/IP, alarm I/O and SCADA settings.

Furthermore, it is possible to install containerized applications directly on the switch. Test now deploying your Docker containers and IOx applications on the ARM powered CPU of the IE3400. We have prepared a sample server application on the DevNet Code Exchange which you can download or build.

Since this switch series runs Cisco’s open and programmable operating system IOS XE, you can even configure the device via the device level APIs such as NETCONF/RESTCONF. This means for example that you can change any device configuration by simply running a Python script from your local machine and apply the changes on as many devices as you want. Start now with this sandbox and receive operational and configuration data in a JSON or XML format to your application.

Check out the industrial NetDevOps page for more information on this use-case and how to get started.

Enjoy this unique sandbox and please let us know your feedback and any feature requests!
