A popular airline just became the first to accept Venmo for payment
You’re probably used to sending a Venmo payment to cover lunch or coffee, but what about using it to hop on a flight?
In an announcement last week, JetBlue says it’s the first airline to accept payment for a plane ticket through Venmo. Many airlines already let you use PayPal (which owns Venmo), but this is the first airline partnership with the popular peer-to-peer payment platform.

You can pay for your JetBlue flights with a linked credit or debit card, a bank account, or your Venmo balance. For now, the feature is available only on jetblue.com, but the company says it will be rolling out in app in the coming months. You also can’t Venmo a payment for in-flight purchases.
If you want to use Venmo to pay, choose “More Payment Options” at checkout. Click on Venmo and a QR code will appear. Scan it and your Venmo app will open with the amount already entered.
What’s the advantage of using Venmo over just entering your card information? It’s a little easier, especially if you don’t have your wallet and physical payment card handy. It’s also convenient for the younger, tech-savvy crowd, for whom Venmo is a familiar and trusted name.
Adding Venmo’s social component, especially Groups, which lets you easily split a payment among friends (like rent, tickets, or travel expenses), makes it even more appealing to that demographic. If you have a group trip, for example, you can easily have one person book everyone’s tickets, pay through Venmo, and then have everyone pay their part.
Another advantage is that if everyone sends you the money via Venmo in advance, you can then make the flight payment by using the money in your Venmo Wallet instead of having to transfer it to your bank account first.

This move comes as digital wallet apps, like Google Wallet, are on the rise. These apps not only serve as payment storage, but can even be used as your official ID and U.S. Passport in some locations, your hotel key, and more.
JetBlue’s partnership with Venmo is the latest in several additions to the company’s digital experience, the company says, including the ability to add a countdown clock to your phone’s lock screen and a detailed overview of snack and drink options on board.
