Five Empowering Tips for ICT Career Success

The path to a career in technology isn’t always easy, and I know this firsthand. I didn’t grow up dreaming of a tech career. I stepped into it out of necessity to support my family. My parents were cleaners, and by the time I was 13, I was helping them clean banks and offices after school. We couldn’t afford University, so I started working young. My first job in tech? A tape operator at IBM.

Back then, I didn’t have a roadmap. I just said “yes” to opportunities, even when they scared me. I spent years learning on the job, taking numerous courses, and leaning into the unknown. I never imagined that one day, I would be leading teams across regions or serving as Cisco’s Global CIO.

Looking back, I can identify five lessons that have shaped my journey. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to advance your career in tech, I hope these tips help you move forward with confidence and purpose.

1. Keep learning, always

Fear holds you back. Learning pushes you forward.

From my humble beginnings, when my parents couldn’t afford to send my brother and me to University, I learned the importance of being a sponge for knowledge. I took every online course I could find, often late into the night.

Today, with the rise of AI and rapid technological changes, it is more important than ever to stay curious and adaptable. Cisco Networking Academy is a great place to start. There are free courses that can give you a solid foundation that will help you kick-start your journey.

We are also in the AI era, so lean in, unlearn, relearn, and keep learning. There will be many jobs in technology in the future. Understanding and leveraging this new tool will empower you to excel.

Remember, AI may be powerful, but it is still a tool. Our human intelligence, comprising values, empathy, and judgment, has the real impact.

2. Build a strong network and give back

I used to think that asking for help was a sign of weakness. Now I know it is a strength.

Throughout my career, mentors, peers, and friends have helped me navigate challenges. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for support; you will find most people genuinely want to help. And when you can, give back and pay it forward. That’s how we build a strong, inclusive community.

3. Own your voice

You are doing incredible work. Make sure others know it.

Earlier in my career, I believed that working hard was enough. However, visibility matters. Speak up. Share your achievements. Tell your story. If you don’t, who will?

Highlight the great work you do and make yourself visible. You’re doing amazing things every day, so tell someone about it. Visibility can open doors to new opportunities, and it’s important to showcase your accomplishments.

That said, it’s not about self-promotion. It’s about showing up with humility and confidence, and helping others rise with you.

4. Overcome barriers with resilience

Communicate your story without forcing your worldview on others, use your experiences as a learning tool, and don’t let barriers define you.

I’ve had moments in my life where I felt like I didn’t belong. Growing up as a Latina in Australia, I faced language barriers, was the only woman in the room, and navigated personal challenges that shaped who I am today.

What I have learned is this: don’t take barriers personally. They’re part of the journey. Learn from them. Grow through them. And use your experience to lift others who may be walking a similar path.

5. Have a clear strategy

In any career, there will be highs and lows. What matters is staying clear on your direction.

Align with your leaders. Support your team. Keep customers and partners at the center of what you do. Your strategy is your compass; it helps you stay grounded when things get tough and guides you toward making a meaningful impact.
