Get Your POAP NFT at the Cisco Live DevNet Zone
On Tuesday, September 17, 1991, Guns N’ Roses released their “Use Your Illusion I and II” albums in conjunction with the Use Your Illusion Tour. I remember walking to my local music store to purchase both CDs. I was planning a special event for our student-run bar, The Rathskeller, at the University of Miami to play both CDs in their entirety. I still have the flyers promoting the event and the concert tickets from GNR’s December 31, 1991 concert at Joe Robbie Stadium.
I have seen GNR a few more times after 1991 and attended many other concerts and sports events, including a Super Bowl, a World Series, and the London 2012 Olympics. I collected many souvenirs each time, but I did not have a way to share the souvenirs. Event organizers did not have a way to deliver additional experiences for attending those events. Well, that is changing.
Top brands offer POAPs
Thanks to the work done during the ETHDenver 2019 Hackathon, the Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP) was created. Now, brands like ADIDAS and Topps have a way to distribute a unique badge backed by a cryptographic record. These tokens are Non Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and open up a whole new world of possibilities for the brand and the collector.
ADIDAS distributed a POAP to identify and reward loyal users of their new CONFIRMED app. Their POAP said,
“This digital collectible is our way of rewarding you for following your curiosity as we explore this new age of originality together. This token proves you were here from the beginning of this journey. Keep it safe — it may come in handy.”
Topps, a leading producer of trading cards, created a POAP for bidders on the Topps 1952 Mickey Mantle Card NFT Auction. Their POAP said, “This event-exclusive NFT celebrates participants in the memorable 1-of-1 Topps 1952 Mickey Mantle Card NFT Auction which took place from March 1 – March 4, 2022. The Topps 1952 Mickey Mantle Card continues to be one of the world’s most coveted vintage relics, and now through Topps Timeless, has been reimagined as a first of its kind NFT digital collectible.”
POAPs for Cisco Live 2022
On June 12 – 16, 2022, Cisco Live in Las Vegas will offer over 1,200 technical and business sessions covering applications, networking, security, cloud, and more. The first 5,000 Cisco Live attendees that stop by the DevNet Zone will be able to use their phones to “mint” the official Proof of Attendance NFT token. A second POAP will be available for the first 1,000 attendees to visit the DevNet Zone “Hello World” desk.
It is the first time that a large organization like Cisco has embraced POAPs to engage with attendees. According to POAP Founder, Patricio Worthalter, “We love helping Cisco pioneer using self-custodied digital assets to celebrate relevant milestones of its community members. Cisco professionals work very hard to achieve technical excellence, and with POAPs, they can own a unique item that, with the help of blockchains, commemorate the event forever”
