Google Meet gets emoji reactions, filters, and mobile screen-sharing
Just a few days after announcing that Google Meet was getting some new AI-powered features, including the ability to summarize meetings and take notes for you, Google is rolling out even more additions to its video conference software.
First up is a new UI. Google says it’ll be similar to Meet’s existing mobile interface, and advanced features like live captions (which are available in more than 70 languages) will now be more accessible. Starting and receiving calls is also easier now, as is scheduling a call for later.

The announcement states that during calls, you’ll see a new real-time chat that lets you share links or comments “when you can’t talk out loud” and new ways to have fun with backgrounds, filters, and effects you can add to your video tile. Google says this includes wardrobe and accessories, and you can stack them on top of each other to show at the same time.
Emoji reactions are also coming to calls, which will let you agree with a comment, celebrate, applaud, or laugh. Plus, they’re available in multiple skin tones.
Since video calls are about sharing or catching up, Google is rolling out screen sharing to both iOS and Android, letting you share photos, videos, or even full presentations to everyone on the call.

If you need to join a call on the go, there’s a new audio-only mode with larger, easier-to-press buttons for use while walking or driving. If you need to switch a call from your tablet to your phone, you can easily move devices without missing anything. Previously, this was only available for meetings.
Google says these updates will gradually roll out over the next few months. You’ll need to make sure you have the most recent version of the Meet app, as will everyone on the call to enjoy the new features.
