I found the one cable to rule them all – and it has a useful durability trick

ZDNET’s key takeaways

  • The combination swivel and 260-degree rotation offer a high level of flexibility for the connector
  • The breakaway magnetic connector not only prevents damage to the device, but it also allows the cable to cater to three different ports
  • The cable is limited to 100W and 480MBps.

Regular readers know that I’m quite a fan of USB-C magnetic breakaway connectors. These are great for preventing those expensive accidents that happen when a laptop, tablet, or smartphone is dragged off a table and crashes onto an unforgiving surface. These breakaway connectors have become a part of my daily carry.

But what if they were built into a cable? And even better, what if that cable had a few other hidden features? Enter the Statik 360 Pro Magnetic Charging Cable.

This magnetic connector can take three different tips.

Swivels and twists

On one end, this cable features a breakaway connector but with a twist — this one can both swivel and rotate through 360 degrees, offering the ultimate flexibility. The magnetized connector clamps firmly onto the end of the cable but is still free to rotate without interrupting power or data transfer.

This connector also has a built-in LED charge indicator, so you’ll get a visual indication when the cable is doing its job.

Three connectors

But there’s more: Unlike the USB-C breakaway connectors I’ve had previously, this one comes with three connectors: USB-C, Lightning, and microUSB. That essentially covers everything you’re likely to come across these days.

On the other end of the cable, there’s yet another cool feature: A connector that transforms from an 18W-capable USB-A connector into a 100W-compatible USB-C connector.

The cable itself

The cable is capable of carrying a maximum of 100W of power when connected to a powerful enough charger and a compatible device. On the data front, this cable is limited to 480MBps, which is much faster than Wi-Fi, but there are faster cables out there. And if you want high-speed data transfer and magnetic breakaway, you’ll need to get yourself a 24-pin adapter, which offers 40Gbps performance.

Again, all your bases are covered. The cable is constructed from a tough, abrasion- and tangle-resistant nylon braid.

But there’s even more: The cable comes with a silicone cable organizer that also holds the magnetic ends securely in place when they’re not in use. This is a great touch and not something I’ve seen on cables with interchangeable ends before. I always lose the ends for these sorts of cables, so a secure place to hold them is really welcome.

ZDNET’s buying advice

The Statik 360 Pro Magnetic Charging Cable comes in 3-foot, 6-foot, and 10-foot lengths. It’s black, and prices range from $23 to $27. There is also a glowing version, and there’s a version with longer connector tips for use with devices that have recessed connectors or phones in rugged cases.

Is this the “one cable to rule them all?” That’s debatable because we all have different wants and needs, but this cable certainly ticks pretty much all the boxes for me. The only downside is at the higher performance end. If you want +100W charging or fast data transfer, this cable isn’t for you.

For me, this is a great addition to my carry kit.
