I never travel without these universal chargers – and they can power laptops

Digital gadgets have become an essential part of modern travel. From smartphones and tablets to e-readers, cameras, drones, and Bluetooth speakers, these devices share one common requirement: power. However, when you’re on the go, you don’t have the convenience of multiple chargers and unlimited outlets like at home. Hotel rooms, in particular, are often annoyingly limited regarding power outlets, and available outlets are usually found in frustrating locations.
This is where universal travel adapters become indispensable. They provide multiple converters compatible with power sockets worldwide, and several USB ports to handle all your charging needs efficiently.

That said, not all universal travel adapters are created equal. They vary significantly in power output, directly impacting their size, bulk, and, most importantly, weight. Choosing the right one can make a big difference in your travel experience.
I’ve been testing Tessan universal travel adapters for a few months now and have become a huge fan. They tick all the boxes for me.
Thanks to the gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors, it runs cool. It’s compatible with US, EU, AU, and UK plugs and can connect to sockets in over 220 countries. The prongs pack away easily into the adapter, and there are three sliding levers for deploying and storing them.

For added peace of mind, it even includes a 10A replaceable fuse in case of unexpected issues.
The Tessan 65W universal travel adapter was the perfect “Goldilocks” solution for my needs. On my recent trip, I had a few gadgets with me — smartphones, tablets, and similar devices — but no laptop. While this adapter could charge my MacBook Pro, it would do so slower than a dedicated 140W charger. Still, for my setup, it struck the ideal balance between power, portability, and convenience.

For those who need more power, Tessan also offers a 140W universal travel adapter, which I’ve had the chance to test. Weighing 9.9 ounces and measuring 3.65 x 2.17 x 2.1 inches, it’s larger and bulkier than the 65W version.
However, it retains the same compatibility with global plugs and sockets and the same safety features, including a replaceable 10A fuse. Its USB port configuration sets it apart: two USB-C ports with a maximum output of 140W, another USB-C port with an 18W max output, and a USB-A port capable of 18W max output. This adapter has no trouble fast-charging my laptop, making it an excellent choice for business trips and power-hungry devices.
But what if you’re traveling light with just a few smartphones or smaller gadgets like earbuds? In that case, a 140W charger — or even a 65W charger — might be overkill. That’s where Tessan’s 35W universal travel adapter comes in.

Weighing only 5.5 ounces and measuring 2.79 x 2.17 x 2.09 inches, it’s compact and lightweight while offering the same global plug compatibility and safety features. This model includes a single USB-C port capable of 35W output and four additional ports (two USB-C and two USB-A) providing 12W output. It’s perfect for lighter travel needs without sacrificing functionality.
ZDNET’s buying advice
The prices are also right, with the Tessan 35W adapter costing only $23, the 65W a bit more expensive at $43, and the 140W “Big One” only $66.
And remember, these don’t have to be used only for travel; they’re equally at home in the home or office.
Please remember that this travel adapter does not convert voltages; any wall plug you connect to the unit must be compatible with the power of the country you’re in. Always check the label before you start plugging things in.
