iOS 19 might help your iPhone battery last all day, thanks to AI

Apple has been sprinkling AI features into its devices via Apple Intelligence and iOS updates. These features have mainly been fun, nice-to-have additive tools, such as Genmoji, Clean Up in Photos, and Natural Language Search in Photos. However, Apple’s latest feature, which is still under wraps, targets a major pain point for users — their phone battery.

New Apple Intelligence feature in iOS 19

On Monday, Bloomberg correspondent and Apple watcher Mark Gurman reported that Apple is working on a new Apple Intelligence feature to help users’ device batteries last longer. According to sources close to the matter, the feature is expected to be released with Apple’s iOS 19 update, slated for September.

The AI-powered optimization feature will reportedly learn a person’s device-usage habits through their battery data and make adjustments to conserve energy, such as predicting when to lower power draw for specific use cases. The feature will also predict how long it will take to charge a device and display that estimate on the lock screen. Apple has not responded to a request for comment.

One of many AI additions coming

Apple’s motivation for creating the feature likely stems from the predicted release of the iPhone 17 Air, which is designed to have a slimmer, lighter form factor than the rest of the lineup. However, the thin design will likely come with a smaller battery. For example, Samsung recently released its ultra-thin Galaxy S25 Edge, which has a 3,900mAh battery, 100mAh less than the smallest Galaxy S25.

This feature is just one of many advanced AI additions Apple is reportedly developing for its Apple Intelligence suite. For example, according to another Gurman report, Apple is working on a completely revamped Health app featuring an AI agent meant to replicate the insights a doctor provides based on biometric data.

Apple-confirmed features are also expected in the future, including Siri 2.0, which will be grounded in personal information and context, and perform actions for users. It will also make Siri more conversational, enabling more human-like conversation, a highly requested upgrade. However, Apple shared that this advanced feature is taking longer than initially anticipated, and it now anticipates that the Siri upgrades will roll out in the coming year.

According to the report, the iOS 16.9 beta is expected to be completed by the end of May and launched to developers at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference next month. It will then be released to the public in September alongside the latest iPhone rollout.
