Multi-Cloud Podcast: Update on Oracle Cloud VMware Solution – Cloud Blog – VMware
Oracle Cloud VMware Solution was launched just over a year ago. What is Oracle Cloud VMware Solution? How is it like other joint VMware / public cloud provider offerings? What makes Oracle Cloud VMware Solution different than offerings such as VMware Cloud on AWS and Azure VMware Solution? These are a few of the questions we discussed on this month’s Multi-Cloud Podcast.
Eric Nielsen (@ericnpro) and I (@djasso7494) talked with Jeff Eberhard about how Oracle and VMware are working together to help make seamless multi-cloud operations a reality. Jeff has been on the show before when he was a solution architect at VMware focused on VMware Cloud on AWS. Since that time Jeff has joined Oracle and now is helping our joint customers build out their hybrid cloud using the best of both VMware and Oracle
Compare and contrast VMware Cloud solutions
On the show we do a bit of compare and contrast between Oracle Cloud VMware Solution and the other VMware / public cloud provider offerings. At the highest level, besides technology differences, all of these solutions can be differentiated along two dimensions. The first dimension relates to who actually is responsible for managing the VMware technology stack running on the public cloud vendor’s environment. The second dimension is about who actually is responsible for selling the customer the solution and by extension supporting it.
Let’s look at three VMware Cloud solutions in order to illustrate the above. Oracle Cloud VMware Solution provides a customer managed, native VMware-based cloud environment, installed within a customer’s tenancy on Oracle Cloud. The solution offers the customer complete control over this environment using familiar VMware tools such as vCenter. Oracle, not VMware sells the solution.
VMware Cloud on AWS offers customers a complete managed service for the VMware technology stack. While the VMware technology stack runs on AWS, VMware actually manages the service. In this solution, all of the lifecycle operations related to the VMware technology stack are carried out by VMware. VMware sells and supports the solution.
Azure VMware Solution is also a fully managed service. This offering is managed, sold and supported by Azure. It can be a bit confusing figuring out what company is actually responsible for selling and supporting a VMware Cloud solution. An easy way to remember who is selling the solution is see what company’s name comes first in the branding. Whatever company’s name comes first owns and supports the solution.
Use Cases driving Oracle Cloud VMware Solution adoption
Besides looking at the differences in who runs the technology stack and why that might matter to a specific customer, we also talked about the most common use cases Jeff is seeing for customers looking to migrate on-premises, VMware based workloads to Oracle Cloud. Not surprisingly, customers that are looking to move Oracle centric applications running on a VMware technology is the foundation of most of the use cases.
It was fun catching up with Jeff on the podcast. Jeff provides a lot of insight into why and when customers choose Oracle as the platform to migrate VMware based workloads running in their data center.
