Managing data at rest is as critical as safeguarding data in motion as enterprises move their data to the cloud, said Proofpoint CEO Sumit Dhawan.

Modern applications with generative AI capabilities mean businesses need to be able to discover, classify and secure data wherever it resides, prompting Proofpoint’s purchase of data security startup Normalyze. Unlike competitors that treat data security posture management, endpoint data loss prevention and compliance as separate solutions, Proofpoint integrates those into a single platform (see: Proofpoint Expands Data Security With Normalyze Acquisition).

“Using Proofpoint’s solution, you can discover all your data, classify all the data, secure it, track it in case someone is trying to leak it, prevent that, and then do a full supervision compliance on it,” Dhawan said. “That’s something that no one in the industry and ecosystem is providing. Our goal is not to say, ‘Hey, we want to win DSPM. We want to provide customers with a full data security solution.'”

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Dhawan also discussed:

  • Integrating Tessian’s tools for accidental data loss, evolving email threats;
  • Pursuit of AI-driven enhancements for threat prevention and detection;
  • How adversaries are expanding their activity to new regions, languages.

At Proofpoint, Dhawan leads a global workforce focused on defending organizations from advanced cyberthreats and compliance risks. He has more than 25 years of experience in scaled enterprise software companies and businesses. Previously, Dhawan served as president of VMware, where he was responsible for driving over $13 billion of revenue and led the company’s go-to-market functions.
